Chapter Twelve
âYou caved, Hols, and I totally donât blame you.â Melinda yanked damp towels from the washing machine, shook each one, and shoved them into the dryer as Holly leaned against the laundry room doorjamb. âThat manâs a hottie for sure. If I werenât old enough to be his mother⦠hell, if I hadnât been friends with his mother and stepmother, Iâd have taken a crack at him myself.â
âI didnât cave, Mom.â She stepped into the compact space, grabbed a basket full of Mattyâs freshly laundered jeans and shirts, and carried it to the living room. âThe decision to be okay with Matty having the lead in the Christmas play has nothing whatsoever to do with Aidan Flaherty. Itâs about Matty having a little fun. Thatâs all.â She dumped the clothes on the sofa. âAnd by the way, ewww! You are way too old for him!â
Melinda, hot on her heels, gave a little hip shake and a wink before plopping down on the couch. âIâve still got it, baby. The boy might need a little older woman experience.â
âMom, seriously, stop or Iâm going to need brain bleach. The point is, Iâm worried about Matty and his fascination with all things riverboat and Aidan Flaherty.â Even though sheâd declared this was the winter Matty was going to learn to do his own laundry, Holly began folding jeans, noting that another pair had a hole in the knee. She held it up, shrugged and simply folded them and added them to the stack. Oh, well. Matty loved shredded pantsâthe more holes the better as far as he was concerned. She bit her lower lip. Torn pants reminded her of Aidan and the sexy low-slung jeans he wore the other night when she was at his apartment above Macâs garage. Soft washed, faded almost white with a hint of tanned thigh showing through a hole in the pant leg.
âIs that your worry?â Melinda reached for a long-sleeved Star Wars T-shirt and folded it neatly. âYouâre sure weâre talking about Mattyâs fascination?â
Holly raked her hair off her face, then flipped her hand tiredly. âOkay. Mine, too. Heâs making it really hard to resist him. Sometimes I feel like that dumb kid who had the terrible crush so many years ago. I just want to hurl myself at him. Hell, I practically did the other night.â
âWhat stopped you?â
Holly groaned. âIâd like to tell you it was common sense, but truth is, he did.â She held a still-warm folded sweatshirt against her chest and shivered, still feeling the effect of Aidanâs kisses and touches. âI think he wants a relationship, Mom.â
âAnd you just want sex?â Melindaâs frank question didnât surprise her at all.
She and her mother had grown into a very open rapport since Holly had returned to Riverâs Edge. Conversations after Cliveâs death had frequently gone on late into the night, both of them talking with brutal honesty about their marriages, Hollyâs childhood, and how Melinda felt sheâd failed as a mother. Time had been
